Aligning with the onset of the new year in the Yoruba calendar, HKW re-opens from 2 to 4 June 2023 with a series of blessings, concerts, lectures, performances, processions, readings, and rituals as well as the launch of the exhibition project O Quilombismo: Of Resisting and Insisting. Of Flight as Fight. Of Other Democratic Egalitarian Political Philosophies.

Internationaler Literaturpreis 2023

For the novel Die geheimste Erinnerung der Menschen (Hanser, 2022) author Mohamed Mbougar Sarr and translators Holger Fock and Sabine Müller are awarded the Internationale Literaturpreis 2023. The winners were announced at an award ceremony on 9 September 2023 in the Forough Farrokhzad Garden at Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW).

I Come as a Woman, Dark and Open (2023)

On 13 August 2023, Venus, the planet of feminine energy, aligns with the sun, causing what only happens once a year: the Venus Star Point, signifying her rebirth and transformation from night star to morning star. Hosted within this symbolic reconfiguration of the sky, Danish-Kenyan Flamenco dancer and choreographer Phyllis Akinyi offer a rhythmic gathering of movement that honours the long history of female influences on revolution and justice, whilst specifically paying tribute to the Haitian Vodou priestess, mambo Cécile Fatiman, who is believed to have led the ceremonial rituals of Bwa Kayiman.

What to do with the world?

Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) invited twelve people from different geographies, grappling with the state of the world in their work across disciplines and contexts, to respond to the question: ‘What to do with the world?’ Artist Wolfgang Tillmans created typographic and photographic interpretations of the twelve responses, which were displayed on billboards throughout Berlin.
